Inhotim Founder Bernardo Paz to Open a Namesake Museum, Right Next Door
Mining magnate and Inhotim founder Bernardo Paz announced plans for the Museu Bernardo Paz, a new 311-acre museum complex in Brazil’s Minas Gerais region near Brumadinho, with a first phase scheduled to open in September 2027. The project will include more than 20 galleries and pavilions, commissioned outdoor installations, a botanical park and forest, and a community center with a library and art studios, plus a pavilion devoted to music and dancing. Initial pavilions are planned for Laura Belém, Sandra Gamarra, Sonia Gomes, Michael Heizer, Anna Maria Maiolino, and Pedro Moraleida, alongside major works by Torkwase Dyson, Frida Orupabo, Giuseppe Penone, and Mario Garcia Torres; Heizer’s pavilion will present his 1993 installations Displaced Replaced Mass #3 and Negative Wall Sculpture #1. Artistic director Paulo Miyada and curatorial advisor Allan Schwartzman (who co-founded Inhotim with Paz in 2006) framed the museum as a public-facing site for “art, nature and community,” with landscaping that will include about 15,000 trees and a million shrubs, cacti, and flowering plants.
