Inside Refik Anadol's Dataland, the world’s first AI art museum

Refik Anadol has opened Dataland in Downtown Los Angeles, described as the world’s first AI art museum, occupying 25,000 square feet in Frank Gehry’s Grand LA development across from Walt Disney Concert Hall. The for-profit venue uses more than half a billion pixels to generate immersive environments based on datasets from partners including the Smithsonian Institution and the Getty, and tickets start at $49. Visitors wear a wristband that tracks heartbeat and physical reactions, feeding biodata into the artworks, and a neck ring that releases a rotating set of 12 scents developed with L’Oréal Luxe. The inaugural experience Machine Dreams: Rainforest draws on Anadol’s visit to the Amazon and meetings with Yawanawá Indigenous leaders, using his “Large Nature Model” to build a narrative-driven installation.
