Irreconcilable differences: Canadian cultural tourism to the US experiences a steep decline
Canadian cultural tourism to the United States has fallen sharply amid strained relations during President Donald Trump’s administration, including his calls to annex Canada as the 51st state and intermittent tariffs on Canadian lumber, steel, and automotive parts. The Art Newspaper reports Canadian tourism to the US is down by more than 30%, with New York City Tourism + Conventions recording a drop from about 983,000 Canadian visitors in 2024 to 800,000 in 2025. Washington State saw a 26% decline in southbound border crossings in October 2025 versus October 2024, and Seattle Art Museum director Scott Stulen said Canadian visits to Seattle fell by 50%, while Oregon reported 21% fewer Canadian visitors in 2025 than the year before. Visit Detroit also cited about a 30% decline in Canadian visitation in 2025, attributing part of the impact to tariff-related barriers affecting tourism and trade.
