Israel's Smotrich Calls to Destroy 40 Palestinian Memorials in West Bank
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order the dismantling of 40 Palestinian memorials in the Occupied West Bank, following an incident in which Knesset member Zvi Sukkot used a sledgehammer to destroy a monument in Madama Village. Smotrich made the request in a letter in late August, five days after Sukkot broadcast the destruction of the memorial, which bore names of Palestinians killed by Israel. Netanyahu denounced Sukkot for taking the law into his own hands, while Smotrich defended him and described the sites as “terrorist monuments,” attaching a table listing 40 memorials and urging the Israeli Defense Forces to remove them within 24 hours. Netanyahu has not publicly responded to Smotrich’s demand.
