Jessica Morgan named new Tate director

Jessica Morgan, director of the New York-based Dia Art Foundation since early 2015, has been appointed the next director of Tate, replacing Maria Balshaw, who stepped down last year. Morgan will begin in January next year, overseeing Tate Britain and Tate Modern as well as Tate’s sites in Liverpool and St Ives. Her appointment follows a turbulent period at Tate marked by industrial action, staff cuts, and declining footfall, as UK national museums face funding pressures and the government considers admission charges for overseas visitors. At Dia, Morgan increased women artists’ representation in the collection from 6.8% in 2015 to about 29%, and Tate noted her work across Dia’s 12 sites and Land art and site-specific programs; Tate is also pursuing a £150m endowment goal by 2030.
