LA’s Getty Center to Close for Renovations Beginning in 2027

The Getty Center in Los Angeles will close for roughly a year for renovations, from spring 2027 to spring 2028, with its last public day set for 15 March 2027. The Getty described the work as its first major “modernization initiatives” since the campus opened in 1997, aimed at improving visitor experience, accessibility, energy resilience, and long-term stewardship, including updates to galleries, the Welcome Hall, and the tram system. Plans also include adding a café to the Welcome Hall, reformatting the retail shop, improving Wi‑Fi and cell service, and introducing new artist commissions; some galleries are already closed for HVAC updates. During the closure, the Getty will emphasize programming at the Getty Villa in Malibu and rent a renovated space on Sepulveda Boulevard across from the Center’s entrance, with CEO Katherine E. Fleming saying the Center will reopen in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
