León Ferrari exhibition cancelled in Chile amid cuts to culture budget

Chile’s Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (MNBA) in Santiago canceled a planned León Ferrari (1920–2013) retrospective that had been in preparation for nearly three years and was scheduled to open in June 2026. MNBA director Varinia Brodsky Zimmermann said the exhibition was suspended due to lack of funding amid government-wide cuts ordered after President José Antonio Kast took office in March, including a nearly 10% reduction to the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage budget. The show was to adapt the 2023 Buenos Aires exhibition Recurrencias and would have brought about 160 works to Chile, including Ferrari’s 1965 Western and Christian Civilization and Nosotros no sabíamos (based on 1976 newspaper clippings). Argentine MNBA director Andrés Duprat said transport, insurance, and the checklist were already in place when the project was halted.
