Leader of the Art Gallery of Ontario will step down after a decade at the helm

Stephan Jost will step down as director and chief executive of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) on 31 December, ending a tenure that began in 2016. During his leadership, the AGO reported that a majority of visitors are now under 39 and around 60% identify as having non-European heritage, and the permanent collection grew by more than 18,000 accessioned works, including major gifts such as 450 works from Carol and Morton Rapp and the 3,500-piece Montgomery Collection of Caribbean Photographs. Jost also launched a C$100m (about $73.4m) expansion adding 40,000 sq. ft of exhibition space—the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery—scheduled to open next year. His decade included controversies, including a 2024 strike involving a union representing more than 400 workers and disputes tied to a planned Nan Goldin acquisition and the 2023 departure of Indigenous curator Wanda Nanibush; the AGO will name an interim director and conduct a global search for his successor.
