Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian Pavilions Stage Pro-Ukraine Procession During Venice Biennale

The Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian pavilions at the 2026 Venice Biennale organized a pro-Ukraine solidarity walk on May 6 during preview days, before the Biennale opens to the public on May 9. According to the Lithuanian Pavilion, the procession honored Ukrainian cultural workers creating during wartime and those killed in ongoing violence; Ukraine’s pavilion presentation, titled “Security Guarantees,” features work by Zhanna Kadyrova. The route began at Lithuania’s pavilion in the Fucina del Futuro, continued to Latvia’s pavilion in the Arsenale, and ended at Estonia’s pavilion at Patronato Salesiano Leone XIII, covering about 1.5 miles. The action occurred amid broader political tensions at the Biennale, including protests at the Russian pavilion by Pussy Riot and FEMEN, a “Solidarity Drone Chorus” opposing Israel’s inclusion, a planned Art Not Genocide Alliance rally and 24-hour strike, and the recent resignation of the Biennale jury following its stance on countries charged with crimes against humanity.
