Long-Contested Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Gets Opening Date

After 20 years of delays and controversy, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation announced that the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on December 11. The 30-gallery museum will join seven other cultural institutions on Saadiyat Island, including the Zayed National Museum and Berklee Abu Dhabi. Guggenheim Director and CEO Mariët Westermann said the collection will be “uniquely local and global” and will emphasize the “experimental character of art since 1960.” The Gulf Labor Coalition, which has highlighted alleged migrant worker abuses tied to the project for 16 years, said key concerns remain unresolved; the Guggenheim had not responded to Hyperallergic’s request for comment.
