Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new David Geffen Galleries reframe 6,000 years of history

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is preparing to reopen its permanent collection after seven years with the new Peter Zumthor–designed David Geffen Galleries, a major component of a 20-plus-year campus overhaul led by CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan (in post since 2006). The $720 million building—owned by Los Angeles County—adds 110,000 square feet of gallery space and 3.5 acres of public park space, and dramatically spans Wilshire Boulevard near the La Brea Tar Pits. David Geffen pledged $150 million in 2017, with additional major support from donors including Elaine Wynn and Steve Tisch, alongside partners such as Hyundai’s Genesis and Qatar Museums. LACMA positions the project as a way to reframe 6,000 years of art history through new exhibition strategies and expanded public programming.
