Madrid’s Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza to open new venue for contemporary art

Madrid’s Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza announced plans for a second venue to house a contemporary art collection from philanthropist Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza and her heirs. The agreement includes a donation of more than 180 works valued at about €16m that will enter public ownership, plus a long-term loan of around 180 additional works valued at about €10m (per Phillips), with artists including Ai Weiwei, Marina Abramović, John Akomfrah, Monica Bonvicini, and Candice Breitz. The new space will occupy the long-disused Palacio del Hielo y del Automóvil on Calle Duque de Medinaceli, to be refurbished by the Spanish government, which will also cover operating costs; an international architectural competition is slated for early next year, and completion is projected around 2031. The museum’s main building near the Prado holds the collection of Hans Heinrich von Thyssen-Bornemisza, purchased by Spain for about $350m in 1993, and also displays works on long-term loan from baroness Carmen Cervera under a 2021 deal.
