Malba picks architect for expansion that will double its exhibition space

The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba) has selected Mexican architect Frida Escobedo to design an expansion built beneath the adjacent Plaza Perú that will double the museum’s exhibition space. The project is expected to open in late 2029 or early 2030, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027, and it will add temporary-exhibition galleries, an auditorium, multipurpose spaces, workshops, and storage, plus new entrances and a roughly 600 sq. m landscaped courtyard and sculpture garden. Malba founder and president Eduardo Costantini also created the Malba Art Trust with an initial $50m contribution to reduce reliance on his annual $3m–$4m support for operating deficits, estimating the fund could cover about 15 years of operations at current levels. Escobedo, who founded her studio in Mexico City in 2006 and opened a New York office in 2022, is also designing the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new modern and contemporary wing and co-working on the Centre Pompidou renovation with Moreau Kusunoki.
