Massimiliano Gioni Named Director of New York’s New Museum
The New Museum in New York named Massimiliano Gioni as its next director, with his term beginning August 1, following an international search, according to a statement by board president James-Keith Brown. Gioni joined the museum in 2006 as a curator and became artistic director in 2014, and he succeeds Lisa Phillips, who announced her retirement last September after 26 years in the role. At the New Museum, he launched the institution’s triennial in 2009 with “The Generational Triennial: Younger Than Jesus,” co-curated with Lauren Cornell and Laura Hoptman, and organized major exhibitions including “After Nature” (2008), “Ostalgia” (2011), “The Keeper” (2016), and “New Humans: Memories of the Future.” Beyond the museum, Gioni has directed major biennials including the 2013 Venice Biennale and the 2010 Gwangju Biennale, and he collaborated on “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America” (2021), one of Okwui Enwezor’s final exhibitions.
