Massimiliano Gioni Will Lead the New Museum
The New Museum in New York announced that Massimiliano Gioni, its artistic director since 2014, has been selected as the institution’s next director after months of speculation. Gioni, who joined the museum in 2006, will take the helm in August, succeeding Lisa Phillips, who announced her retirement last September. He will become only the New Museum’s third director since it opened in 1977, following founder Marcia Tucker (until 1999) and Phillips. His current exhibition, “New Humans: Memories of the Future,” features work by more than 200 artists, architects, and scientists and opened in March alongside an OMA expansion that doubled the museum’s size.
