Melissa Chiu leaving Hirshhorn to take over New York’s Guggenheim Museum

Melissa Chiu, director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC since 2014, will leave to become director of New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Her final day at the Hirshhorn is 31 August, and she begins at the Guggenheim on 1 September, working under Mariët Westermann, who has served as the New York museum’s director since 2024 and will refocus on the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s global network. At the Hirshhorn, Chiu increased fundraising by 75%, more than doubled attendance, and led a $68m garden revamp designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto scheduled to open in October. Deputy director Aaron Seeto will serve as interim director while a successor is sought.
