Met Museum to Stage Giacometti Show in Temple of Dendur This Summer

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will stage “Giacometti in the Temple of Dendur” beginning June 12, placing 17 sculptures by Swiss modernist Alberto Giacometti in and around the Temple of Dendur, an ancient Egyptian monument dating to around 10 BCE. Fourteen works come from the Fondation Giacometti and the remainder from the Met, with highlights including Walking Woman (I) (1932) in the offering hall and Women of Venice (1956) on the terrace. The show is positioned as a major event while the Met’s modern art wing is closed for renovation and as an effort to bridge curatorial departments, following the museum’s 2024 exhibition “Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–Now.” It is co-produced by the Met’s Egyptian and modern/contemporary departments, with Aude Semat and Stephanie D’Alessandro, alongside Fondation Giacometti curator Emilie Bouvard.
