Metropolitan Museum of Art Breaks Ground on $670 M. Tang Wing for Modern and Contemporary Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York broke ground Tuesday on the Tang Wing, a new modern and contemporary art wing named for emeritus trustee Oscar L. Tang and his wife H. M. Agnes Hsu-Tang. The project has been in development since 2014 and accelerated after the couple’s $125 million gift in 2021, described as the Met’s largest capital gift at the time; Mexico City–based architect Frida Escobedo was announced as designer in 2022, and designs were unveiled in 2025. The Met said it has raised $670 million to cover construction and a significant portion of operating costs, with the wing scheduled to open in 2030. The 126,000-square-foot addition will include nearly 70,000 square feet of exhibition space across five levels, recessed upper floors for terraces, a top-floor café, and galleries with 11- to 22-foot ceiling heights; the rooftop garden closed in October ahead of construction and will reopen on a larger fourth-floor terrace in 2030.
