MFA Boston will lay off 33 employees amid rising deficit and restructuring
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston announced on January 27, 2026, that it will lay off 33 employees as part of a restructuring plan to address what it described as an “unsustainable deficit,” according to reporting by The Art Newspaper. The layoffs, effective January 30, reduce the museum’s roughly 520-person staff by about 6.3% and include 16 unionized roles represented by United Auto Workers Local 2110, which said it received one day’s notice. The museum said the cuts are part of a comprehensive plan to realign the organization and create a sustainable business model. The MFA previously carried out layoffs in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, when 56 employees took early retirement and 57 staff members were laid off, and then-director Matthew Teitelbaum took a 30% pay cut.
