MoMA Names Makeda Best as Photography Curator

The Museum of Modern Art announced on June 2 that Makeda Best will become its chief curator of photography starting in September, filling a role vacant since Clément Chéroux departed in 2022. Best joins from the Oakland Museum of California, where she has been deputy director of curatorial affairs since 2023, and she will oversee acquisitions, installations, exhibitions, publications, and loan programs. MoMA director Christophe Cherix, who took over in September last year, called Best a curator and scholar with a “fresh vision”; MoMA’s photography holdings include about 35,000 prints and objects. Best trained as a photographer at CalArts, earned a Harvard doctorate focused on Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner, and has curated exhibitions including “Devour the Land” and “American Job” at the International Center of Photography.
