MoMA to Present the First Survey of Piet Mondrian’s New York Paintings
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York announced “Mondrian Boogie Woogie,” the first survey focused on Piet Mondrian’s New York paintings and the influence of boogie-woogie music on his late work. On view from March 21 through July 31, 2027, the exhibition will assemble 30 paintings made or completed between Mondrian’s move to New York in 1940 and his death there in 1944. Anchoring the show are “Broadway Boogie Woogie” (1942–43), owned by MoMA, and “Victory Boogie Woogie” (1942–44), usually at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which is partnering on the project. Co-curator Leah Dickerman said the exhibition will also trace boogie-woogie’s history from late-19th-century roots in the American South through its northward migration after World War I.
