Mondrian Estate Teams With One-Time NFT Sensation Doodles
The estate of Piet Mondrian has partnered with web3 entertainment company Doodles to release a set of on-chain digital collectibles (NFTs) that remix five Mondrian works in Doodles’ pastel palette. The tokens go on sale June 3 on OpenSea and are based on Composition with Grid 9: Checkerboard Composition with Light Colors (1919), Composition with Red, Black, Blue, and Yellow (1928), Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow (1930), Composition No. 10 (1939–42), and Victory Boogie Woogie (1942–44). Buyers can purchase a “blind box” containing all five, plus two limited editions tied to the 1928 and 1930 works that include physical prints, and they also receive an additional digital collectible (a Doodle Dog or Doodle Pencil) on the VeVe app. Doodles, created in 2021 by Canadian illustrator Scott Martin (Burnt Toast), has fallen more than 95% from its winter 2022 peak on OpenSea, where its floor price dropped from about $50,000 to under $1,000; trustee Madalena Holtzman of the Mondrian/Holtzman Trust said the collaboration aims to engage younger adults.
