My Queasy, Forest-Scented Stroll Through LA’s New AI Art Museum
Hyperallergic reviews Dataland, billed as “the world’s first museum of AI Arts,” co-founded by media artist Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkılıç and opening to the public in Los Angeles on June 20. Located in the 25,000-square-foot space inside The Grand LA, a Frank Gehry–designed tower on Grand Avenue, Dataland’s inaugural show “Machine Dreams: Rainforest” uses 1.2 billion data points to generate an immersive audio-visual-olfactory environment, including a wearable scent device. The project is built around a “Large Nature Model” trained on permission-based datasets and partnerships with institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Natural History Museum in London, alongside surveys of 16 rainforests. Ticket prices are listed at $49–$79, with priority access passes priced at $89–$129.
