Nari Ward Tackles the Immigrant Experience at Deste Foundation’s Hydra Fete
On 23 June, Jamaican-born, New York–based artist Nari Ward unveiled “Until That Day” at the Deste Foundation’s Slaughterhouse project space on Hydra, Greece, during collector Dakis Ioannou’s annual fete. On view through 31 October, the exhibition comprises 10 new works examining migration, memory, and belonging, with particular attention to the Afro-Greek community. The central sculpture, Fire Hose Man, is built from old luggage bound with lengths of fire hose, a recurring material in Ward’s practice. The event drew art-world figures including curators Cecilia Alemani, Ann Temkin, and Larry Ossei-Mensah, as well as artists such as Raúl de Nieves and Maurizio Cattelan.
