New Bienal de Yucatán to spotlight Mexican region’s growing art scene

Mérida, the capital of Mexico’s Yucatán state, will host the first Bienal de Yucatán from 26 November 2026 to 28 February 2027 to spotlight the region’s growing contemporary art scene. The biennial is founded by French-born patron and curator Catherine Petitgas, who supports local art through Proyecto Y, and Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas will serve as the inaugural artistic director. The article also notes pressures from tourism-driven growth and gentrification, and highlights the inaugural Week of Art Yucatán held in late January, which brought together more than 20 spaces across venues including Salón Gallos, Plantel Matilde, and the pop-up Nepantla.
