New Museum names Massimiliano Gioni as new director

The New Museum in New York has promoted Massimiliano Gioni, its longtime artistic director, to director of the institution. Gioni, who joined the museum in 2006 as a curator and later became associate director and director of exhibitions, succeeds Lisa Phillips, who led the museum from 1999 and announced her retirement last year; Phillips had succeeded founder Marcia Tucker, who opened the museum in 1977. During his tenure, Gioni oversaw major solo exhibitions of artists including Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Tacita Dean, and Theaster Gates, and organized thematic shows such as the ongoing “New Humans: Memories of the Future,” the inaugural exhibition of the museum’s $82 million expansion. Designed by OMA’s Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas with Cooper Robertson, the project added 60,000 sq. ft., doubling the museum’s footprint to 120,000 sq. ft.
