New Museum's Shiny New Building Leaks During Flash Floods

New York’s New Museum temporarily closed for a weekend after a “significant” leak occurred during flash floods on July 18, with staff using buckets to catch water entering a gallery. The museum said immediate steps were taken and that no artworks were harmed, including WangShui’s “oppose the serpent” (2024), which was on view at the time. The incident comes only months after the museum reopened its expanded, OMA-designed building in March following two years of closure. The $82 million, 60,000-square-foot expansion doubled exhibition space and launched with “New Humans: Memories of the Future,” featuring work by more than 150 artists, though the building has received mixed critical reviews.
