New Museum unveils Sarah Lucas's bawdy Bowery commission
The New Museum unveiled Sarah Lucas’s public-plaza commission “VENUS VICTORIA” (2026) on Tuesday, 12 May, at the intersection of Bowery and Prince Street in New York. The sculpture depicts a pink-hued figure in yellow high heels straddling a giant cast-concrete washing machine, riffing on the tradition of the reclining nude. Lucas was selected by an all-artist jury including Teresita Fernández, Joan Jonas, Julie Mehretu, Cindy Sherman, and Kiki Smith, and the work will remain on view for two years before being replaced by another commission by a woman artist. The installation sits at the foot of the New Museum’s OMA-designed Toby Devan Lewis Building and is positioned as a counterpart to Tschabalala Self’s façade commission “Art Lovers” (2025).
