New York Historical receives gift of 150 works by Indigenous artists
On 23 February 2026, The New York Historical (NYH) in Manhattan announced it has acquired a gift of 150 works of contemporary Native art from Agnes Hsu-Tang, chair of the museum’s board of trustees, and her husband Oscar Tang. Coordinated by NYH chief executive Louise Mirrer, the donation is framed as a landmark acquisition timed to the United States’ 250th anniversary and described as the largest gift of Native art to a New York art institution since the establishment of the Museum of the American Indian. The works include art by Fritz Scholder, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, T.C. Cannon, Cara Romero, Nampeyo of Hano, Maria Martinez, Angel De Cora, and Zitkala-Ša, and are intended to integrate Native history into broader American-history narratives.
