New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Announces a Record $323.8 M. in Culture Funding
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council speaker announced a $125.8 billion budget that includes a record $323.8 million appropriation for the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in the city’s fiscal year 2027 budget. The DCLA allocation is more than 6% higher than last year’s record $299.6 million and supports the 39-member Cultural Institutions Group, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA PS1, Lincoln Center, and the American Museum of Natural History, as well as organizations such as El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of Jewish Heritage. For the first time, the budget includes a Cultural Stability Fund providing $10 million annually through fiscal year 2029 as an emergency resource for cultural organizations and artists. Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij said the budget signals that New York “believes in the arts and in its artists” amid affordability pressures on the sector.
