Newsmakers: Nalini Malani Lets the Walls Speak with a New Installation in Venice
ARTnews reported on Nalini Malani’s new installation “Of Woman Born,” commissioned by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and presented at Venice’s Magazzini del Sale, a 15th-century former salt warehouse, during the opening period of the Venice Biennale next month. The work projects Malani’s animations—derived from tens of thousands of hand-drawn images—directly onto the building’s uneven brick walls, combining mythology, literature, and sound in an immersive environment. Malani, 80, also extended her recurring “Skipping Girl” figure across Venice via posters and public signage to guide viewers to the installation. In an interview, she said the project began before the Venice invitation and uses the myth of Orestes to examine enduring structures of power, while allowing the historic architecture—still marked by salt—to remain visible rather than covered.
