NYC Mayor Mamdani Approves Record $323M Funding for Culture
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council approved a record $323.8 million appropriation for the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in the city’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget, a nearly 7% increase from last year’s then-record $299.6 million. The agreement was reached ahead of the July 1 budget deadline as part of a $125.8 billion city budget negotiated with City Council Speaker Julie Menin. The budget also creates a “Cultural Stability Fund,” a $10 million annual pool through fiscal year 2029 to help eligible cultural organizations facing emergency circumstances. Mamdani framed the increase as a response to an affordability crisis that threatens to push artists out of the city, while advocates have also raised concerns about borough inequities in how DCLA funding is distributed.
