Otto Muehl Retrospective at Vienna Actionism Museum Courts Controversy in Advance of September Opening
The Vienna Actionism Museum (WAM), which opened in March 2024, is facing renewed controversy ahead of its Otto Muehl retrospective, “Otto Muehl: Art on the Precipice,” opening September 10 and running through January 10, 2027. The exhibition will present 150 works—paintings, objects, film, and prints—drawn from WAM’s collection and private loans, but critics object both to Muehl’s graphic art and to his criminal history. Muehl, a co-founder of Viennese Actionism, founded the Friedrichshof commune and was convicted in 1991 of sexual offenses against minors, rape, and illegal drug use; he served seven years in prison and died in Portugal in 2013. WAM’s press materials say the show excludes images depicting abuse and omits the “Accidents in the Home” series (1986), while Der Standard reported that survivors and observers dispute the museum’s framing and question consent and the ethics of potentially boosting the market for Muehl’s work.
