Pace Cuts 50 Workers and 50 Artists, Citing a “Broken” Gallery Model
Pace Gallery has laid off 50 employees and dropped 50 artists, reducing its roster by about 30% and its staff by about 20% to around 200 from roughly 250, according to reporting confirmed by Hyperallergic. CEO Marc Glimcher described the move as a “model correction,” arguing that the current “mega gallery” model is “broken” and that Pace will focus on around 80 artists and estates. The gallery declined to identify affected staff or provide a full list of artists, but Hyperallergic noted that a February snapshot of Pace’s website showed artists no longer listed, including JR, Damian Loeb, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, as well as estates such as Richard Avedon and Keith Sonnier. Sources said news of the cuts circulated before a formal internal announcement, causing confusion among employees.
