Pace Gallery’s June 4 announcement that it would cut 50 artists from its roster and lay off 50 employees has drawn criticism from workers and some artists who say the downsizing was rapid and lacked transparency, according to interviews with Hyperallergic. CEO Marc Glimcher publicly framed the move as a response to an “unfixable” gallery model and, staff said, later told employees in a surprise Zoom town hall that he took personal responsibility for the decisions leading to the cuts. Employees described confusion about who had been laid off and said the reductions appeared to fall on administrative and managerial roles, with one staffer stating that no executives were laid off to her knowledge. A longtime employee who was let go after nearly two decades said he first learned of the layoffs through the New York Times and received what he described as a standard, uniform severance package.
