Painting “Intentionally” Defaced at Museum of African American Culture
The Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC) said Clarence Heyward’s self-portrait “Man in the Garden” (2025) was intentionally defaced by visitors, with Houston police investigating a May 21 report of “criminal mischief.” Police identified two male suspects seen near the museum, one believed to have damaged the work, and said no arrests had been made as of the report. HMAAC’s June 8 press release described puncture and scratch damage to the canvas; CEO Emeritus John Guess, Jr. condemned “violence as a response to ideas,” and the museum chose to stop restoration and re-display the painting in its altered state. The work appears in Heyward’s solo exhibition “EDEN,” which uses the Genesis story to examine Black American identity and belonging, and HMAAC CEO Davinia Reed said the institution would not be deterred from its mission.
