Perfect posture? MoMA exhibition explores perspectives on body politics in public spaces

MoMA’s exhibition Taking Back Our Space: Photographic Perspectives uses Marianne Wex’s Let’s Take Back Our Space—made from street photographs taken in Hamburg between 1972 and 1977—as a starting point to examine body politics in public space. Wex (1937–2020) organized images of posture and body language to argue that “female” and “male” gestures reflect patriarchal structures; MoMA acquired the work in 2018. Acting chief curator of photography Roxana Marcoci frames the show as extending Wex’s inquiry through intersectional feminist perspectives attentive to race, colonialism, Indigenous sovereignty, sexuality, and self-representation. The exhibition features seven contemporary artists: Nona Faustine, Martine Gutierrez, Joiri Minaya, Yuki Kihara, Wendy Red Star, K8 Hardy, and Paulina Olowska. Taking Back Our Space: Photographic Perspectives runs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 20 September to 2 May 2027.
