Photomontage of Israel bombing Gaza will go on show at Art Basel Qatar

Pakistani artist Rashid Rana will present Black Square (2025) at the inaugural Art Basel Qatar (5–7 February 2026; preview days 3–4 February), a wall-based photomontage grid made from hundreds of stills from an open-sourced CCTV camera in Gaza showing a night of Israeli bombardment in spring 2025. The work is priced at $30,000 and is being shown by the Mumbai gallery Chemould Prescott Road, which said all proceeds will go to Gaza relief funds selected by director Shireen Gandhy in consultation with Palestine community workers. The piece was first shown in June 2025 at Frieze’s No. 9 Cork Street space in London. The article situates the presentation amid heightened regional tensions, noting that in September 2025 Israel carried out a missile strike in Doha targeting Hamas leadership that killed six people, and that since Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack that killed more than 1,200 Israelis and took more than 250 hostages, more than 71,000 Palestinians are estimated to have been killed in Gaza, according to the local health authority.
