Prolific Mexican Curator Cuauhtémoc Medina Will Organize 2027 Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala
Mexican curator and art historian Cuauhtémoc Medina has been appointed to curate the 25th Bienal de Arte Paiz, organized by the Fundación Paiz para la Educación y la Cultura and scheduled to open in 2027 in Guatemala City and Antigua. The exhibition will run from November 2027 through February 2028, and Medina said it is “a great honor, but also a challenge,” emphasizing the biennial’s role in serving Guatemalan audiences. Medina previously served as Tate Modern’s first associate curator of Latin American art (2002–2008) and as chief curator at MUAC (2013–2024), while holding a position at UNAM’s Institute of Aesthetic Research since 1993. He curated Manifesta 9 in Belgium in 2012, the 12th Shanghai Biennial in 2018, and won the $15,000 Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement in 2012; Fundación Paiz executive director Sonia Hutarte said the upcoming edition aims to rethink what a biennial should mean today and what Guatemala can contribute to contemporary art debates.
