Pussy Riot Turns Its Venice Biennale Protest Into a Music Video
Pussy Riot has released a music video for its song “DISOBEY” made from footage of the group’s protest at the unveiling of the 61st Venice Biennale, where members in pink balaclavas set off multicolored smoke bombs in front of the Russian pavilion. The 90-second track is the lead single from Pussy Riot’s forthcoming debut album, CYKA, which is set to arrive on streaming platforms on June 12. Founder Nadya Tolokonnikova said the group’s first attempted album, KILL THE SEXIST (2011–12), was never finished after members were jailed for two years, and she began working on CYKA after ending her “Police State” durational performance at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles last summer. The album features guests including B Real, Avenged Sevenfold, and Salem Ilese, and addresses themes such as prescription drug culture, rebellion, and state-sponsored violence.
