Qatar Is Building a Permanent Pavilion for Gerhard Richter to Open in November
Qatar Museums will open a permanent pavilion devoted to Gerhard Richter on November 20 in MIA Park outside Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art. Designed by Richter in collaboration with Selldorf Architects, led by Annabelle Selldorf, the free-standing structure will house a distinct group of Richter’s paintings and sculpture, including Strip paintings, Mirrors, and the Strip Tower, with exterior tiles based on his “Patterns.” Richter said a 2013 trip to Doha influenced the concept, linking the pavilion’s design to the development of his Strip works, and called Doha “the right place and the only place” for the project. The opening coincides with Rubaiya Qatar, a new quadrennial launching November 21 and running through April 2027, which will include 25 new commissions and six public art installations with an emphasis on artists from outside the Western Hemisphere.
