Refik Anadol’s Dataland Museum Sets an Opening Date
Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkiliç will open Dataland, billed as the world’s first A.I. art museum, in Los Angeles on June 20 after more than two-and-a-half years of planning and construction. Located in the Frank Gehry-designed Grand L.A. complex, the 35,000-square-foot, five-gallery museum (designed by Gensler) will debut with “Machine Dreams: Rainforest,” which uses ecological data such as birdsongs, plant life, and weather to generate what Anadol calls “digital sculptures.” The museum says about a third of its space is devoted to operating hardware and that its Large Nature Model (LNM) runs on an 87% carbon-free service in Oregon, estimating a visitor’s stay uses about as much energy as charging a smartphone. Dataland was originally slated to open in late 2025 and is positioned within Downtown L.A.’s cultural corridor near MOCA, the Broad, and Walt Disney Concert Hall.
