Reimagining Willem De Kooning’s Legacy Through Dance And Immersive Digital Art

The Canopy at 900 North Michigan Shops in Chicago has partnered with the Art Institute of Chicago and The Joffrey Ballet on “Excavation of Movement,” an immersive digital project inspired by Willem de Kooning. Joffrey dancers performed choreography in front of de Kooning works at the Art Institute, and the filmed performance was transformed into a ten-panel digital artwork designed for The Canopy’s 190 feet of LED screens. The project is presented as a translation of de Kooning’s energetic lines and brushstrokes into movement and digital media, led in part by The Canopy resident artist Adrian Stein of Haze Labs. The collaboration aligns with the Art Institute’s exhibition “Willem de Kooning Drawing,” on view through September 20, 2026, featuring more than 200 drawings, paintings, sculptures, and prints and marking the museum’s first solo presentation of de Kooning since 1969.
