Remembering Axel Burrough, Kazumasa Nagai, and Éliane Radigue

Hyperallergic’s weekly “In Memoriam” column (published Wednesday afternoons) commemorated multiple recent deaths in the art world, including French experimental composer Éliane Radigue (1932–2026), British architect Axel Burrough (1946–2026), and Japanese graphic designer Kazumasa Nagai (1929–2026). Radigue was noted for pioneering electronic music in the 1960s using feedback and tape loops, with work presented by institutions including the San Francisco Art Institute and the New York Cultural Art Center. Burrough, a director at Levitt Bernstein Architects, helped design the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester and led construction and remodel projects including the Bristol Beacon concert hall and the Theatre Royal in Bury St. Edmunds. Nagai was recognized for shaping Japan’s 1960s advertising boom and for designing visual identities including the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics and Japan Railways.
