Remembering Julio Le Parc, a pioneer of kinetic art

Julio Le Parc, the Argentine-born pioneer of kinetic art, died in Paris on 30 May at age 97, having lived there since the late 1950s. Tate Modern will open a major survey, Light. Colour. Action (11 June–3 May 2027), featuring more than 60 works spanning seven decades of his career. Le Parc co-founded the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) and helped redefine spectatorship by using light, color, mirrors, and movement to encourage active public participation. He won the International Grand Prize for Painting at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966, an upset over widely favored Roy Lichtenstein, and later had major retrospectives including Julio Le Parc: Un visionario in Buenos Aires in 2019.
