Review | ‘£1 a minute’: is the British Museum's Bayeux Tapestry exhibition worth it?

The British Museum opened its Bayeux Tapestry exhibition to the public, and a first-day visitor reported waiting about 45 minutes in combined queues before entering the dimly lit gallery. The 70m-long, roughly 950-year-old textile is displayed flat at about waist height, allowing close viewing, but visitors are repeatedly urged to keep moving, limiting time to absorb the complex narrative culminating in the 1066 Battle of Hastings. With a standard ticket priced at £33 and a viewing time of about 35 minutes, the experience works out to nearly £1 per minute (around 35 seconds per each of the tapestry’s 58 scenes). The exhibition runs until 11 July, with the next tranche of tickets going on sale on 21 October, and the museum expects the costly show to generate profit.
