Robert Mnuchin's $85.7m Rothko leads Sotheby's $407.5m auction in New York

Sotheby’s New York staged a two-part evening sale led by works from the late dealer and former Wall Street executive Robert Mnuchin (died December 2025, aged 92), totaling $407.5 million ($433.1 million with fees), within the pre-sale estimate range of $325.6 million to $444 million (estimates exclude fees). Mnuchin’s 11-lot single-owner group was fully guaranteed and achieved $140.7 million ($166.3 million with fees), including Mark Rothko’s 1957 “Brown and Blacks in Reds,” which sold for $74 million ($85.7 million with fees) against a $70 million–$100 million estimate. Other notable results included Rothko’s 1949 “No. 1” at $17.5 million ($20.8 million with fees), Willem de Kooning’s “Untitled” (1970) at $8.8 million ($10.8 million with fees) and “Untitled XLII” (1983) at $10.2 million ($12.4 million with fees), and Franz Kline’s 1960 “Harleman” at $12 million ($14.4 million with fees).
