Russian drone destroys unique 300-year-old wooden Cossack church in Ukraine

A Russian drone strike over the weekend of 1–2 August destroyed the Holy Vvedenska (Presentation) Church in Beryslav, in Ukraine’s Kherson region, an 18th-century structure officials described as the country’s last surviving example of wooden Cossack architecture from that period. Oleksandr Alchiev, head of the Beryslav City Military Administration, said on 3 August that the church was built in 1725 from oak taken from the Perevolochna fortress of the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks, assembled without nails, and transported to Beryslav in 1784. The church was reported to be under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, historically affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate, while the Orthodox Church of Ukraine was established in 2018 to break with Moscow. The heritage group Skeiron appealed for photographs so it can create a digital 3D version of the destroyed monument.
