School of Visual Arts Ends Photography MFA Program
The School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York will end its graduate Photography, Video, and Related Media MFA program due to a mounting institutional deficit, according to an email from Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Jason Koth shared with Hyperallergic. Koth said current MFA Photo candidates will be able to complete their degrees without interruption, and the program will close in its 40th year with the Class of 2028’s graduation. He cited SVA’s economic challenges, a nationwide decline in enrollment in graduate-level photography programs, and broader federal policy and financial headwinds as reasons the current model is unsustainable. Founding chair Charles Traub, who launched the program in 1988, said the closure might have been avoided with better coordination and more aggressive planning for the future impact of AI.
