See you, Searle: Guardian chief art critic bows out after 30 years
Adrian Searle is stepping down as The Guardian’s chief art critic after more than 30 years, according to a 13 February 2026 report in The Art Newspaper. Searle called his time writing for the paper “an exhilarating ride” and is known for influential, sometimes acerbic criticism, including his 1999 review of Tracey Emin’s Turner Prize presentation at Tate Britain and his response to Doris Salcedo’s Shibboleth at Tate Modern in 2007. His final article, reflecting on three decades of criticism and what he learned, is scheduled to appear on 1 April. The Guardian’s art coverage will continue with critics including Jonathan Jones, Charlotte Jansen, Chloë Ashby, and Eddy Frankel.
